Librarian - Customer Services. SSM-1
Summary: Los Alamos National Laboratory Research Library, one of the world's premier digital scientific libraries, has a current position open for a Librarian on the Library Team. The Research Library offers a creative setting in which information technologies are applied to scientific productivity. We aggressively pursue new ideas, services, technologies, and approaches to satisfy research needs.
Members of the Library Team work directly with Laboratory researchers. The successful candidate will actively partner with Laboratory researchers in support of our mission to facilitate access to and enhance the usability of information. Helping to optimize the customers' research time is critical to the success of the Research Library and to the overall success of the Laboratory. Customer focus and satisfaction are priorities. Responsibilities
- Provide excellent customer service, anticipating and exceeding the needs of our customers.
- Gain an in-depth knowledge of customer requirements to ensure Research Library products and services increase the Laboratory researcher's productivity. Train customers in the use of these products and services. Assist in the development of marketing tools.
- Use and advocate emerging technologies to locate information for and provide it to our customers.
- Provide reference service which will include responding to email and phone inquiries, and staffing the service desk.
- Interact with customers in the field to better understand their use of our products.
- Collect customer input through daily interactions and in-depth interviews to determine current and future customer needs. Communicate this input back to the Research Library via appropriate channels.
- Participate in collection development process as a member of the selection team. Ensure that research information resources match the needs of Laboratory scientists. Utilize professional resources, customer input, and usage data for purchase and cancellation recommendations.
- Serve as an advocate for the Research Library and represent the library in Laboratory and industry activities
- Collaborate with and/or undertake assignments with other teams at the Research Library.
Required Skills, Knowledge, Abilities
- Experience working with customers, determining and supporting customer needs, and building relationships, all with a strong customer service commitment.
- Evidence of strong reference skills; familiarity with current theory, practices, and issues related to research and reference services. Knowledge of standard reference tools and library applications in the sciences and engineering.
- Demonstrated interpersonal, organizational, and analytical skills including communication and presentation skills, both written and oral.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as a team member, with people of diverse backgrounds, and to promote a positive working environment, spirit of cooperation and positive reactions to change.
- Willingness to learn on-the-job, to set and accomplish goals, work under pressure, and meet deadlines.
Desired Skills, Knowledge, Abilities- Experience working in a scientific or technical library/information center.
- Formal education or training in a scientific or engineering field.
- Experience with bibliographic management software such as RefWorks or Endnote.
- Experience with tools such as wikis, blogs, and other collaboration software tools.
- Familiarity with information science standards and practices (e.g. MARC, Dublin Core, MARCXML, AACR2, LCSH).
- Knowledge of HTML, XML, XSLT, OAI-PMH, OpenURL, and link resolvers.
Education
Master's degree in Library/Information Science from an ALA accredited institution or equivalent combination of education and experience.
