1. Research Library creates home page on WWW
======================================================
The Research Library now has a home page on the World Wide Web. The URL is http://lib-www.lanl.gov. It is also accessible through the LANL Home Page under Library Catalogs and Information.

The Library's web page reflects the information found on the Library's gopher (lib-info.lanl.gov) with both Library information and links to subject resources of interest to Laboratory staff.

Subject folders currently under construction are General Reference, Biology-Genetics, Environmental, Government Resources, Internet and Physics; with more to follow.

We are open to suggestions of useful resources for both the Gopher and the Web. Comments and suggestions may be directed to lib-info@lanl.gov.

2. Mathematical and theoretical methods in physics table of contents service
======================================================
Elsevier Science is providing a free-of-charge table of contents service via e-mail. "CONTENTS-Alert" can assist in the task of tracing the most interesting publications in a way that takes as little time as possible. "CONTENTS-Alerts" is a current awareness service which delivers, through e-mail, the tables of contents of a selected group of journals. Through e-mail one can receive these tables of contents before or upon publication of the journals, browsable from your desktop.

The journals included are : Computer Physics Communications, Journal of Geometry and Physics, Nuclear Physics B, Physica A, Physica D, Physics Letters A, Physics Letters B, Physics Reports and Wave Motion.

To apply for this service, send your full address to c-alert.mathphy@elsevier.nl. "CONTENTS-Alert" is a biweekly service. Allow three weeks processing time for your free subscription.

The Research Library subscribes to all of these titles except Journal of Geometry and Physics. After receiving these tables of contents and identifying articles of interest, you can e-mail the citation to circinfo@lanl.gov to receive a photocopy of the article. If you want to browse the journal, you can check the online catalog record to see it that specific issue has been received before visiting the library.

3. Classification guides
======================================================
The Report Collection has traditionally been the resource for Laboratory employees requesting their own copy of one of the current Classification Guides. This role is changing. CIC-10 (Information and Records Management) took over classified report distribution on July 1, 1993, including initial distribution of Classification Guides. CIC-10, not the Report Collection, is now also the place to contact when you want your own copy of one of the Guides that are currently still in use. You should call 7-7318 (Classified Correspondence Team, Alfred Garcia, Team Leader) to place a request. When you no longer want a particular Guide, please return it to CIC-10. The Report Collection's role is evolving to maintaining archival copies of all Classification Guides ever issued for use at the Lab, whether now obsolete or still in use.

4. Code of Federal Regulations
======================================================
The U.S. Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) is a codification of the rules and regulations established by the executive departments and agencies of the federal government. The Research Library has two versions of the CFR -- a print version in the Reference collection and a compact disc version on LIBNET, the Library's internal network. The CFR is divided into 50 titles which represent broad subject areas, such as Title 10-Energy and Title 50-Protection of the Environment. Each title is divided into chapters, which usually bears the name of the issuing agency, and is further divided into subchapters and parts.

The CD version contains all 50 titles of the CFR while the print version in the library consists of just selected titles. The print version updates each title once a year on a staggered basis while the CD version updates monthly and claims to include regulations from the Federal Register which are currently in force. The CD version has the added capability to search by words or phrases and a fairly precise search can be constructed using a search matrix. Results can be viewed on the screen, printed, or downloaded to a disk.

The Research Library offers training in the use of this new addition to the Library's specialized database collection. January's sessions are scheduled for Tuesday, the 10th, at 1 p.m., and Thursday, the 26th, also at 1 p.m. If you would like to reserve a spot, please send an e-mail message to ref@lanl.gov or call the Research Desk at 7-5809. Happy hunting in the world of federal regulations!

5. Gordon and Breach journals
======================================================
Gordon and Breach (G&B) is known in the library world to have the most expensive journals. The most expensive journal in the Research Library is Ferroelectrics priced at $11,861.00 for 1995. With the introduction of a new contractual agreement from G&B, prices for these journals may increase three to six times. This increase does not allow for the normal cost of living increase.

The Research Library currently subscribes to 28 G&B titles at a cost of $60,727.97. In 1994 the Research Library subscribed to 1850 journals with a budget of $1,703,887. The first step in responding to this increase is to reevaluate these titles. Are these titles necessary to our collection? Please forward your comments and suggestions to ref@lanl.gov.
