NEW EXPERIMENTAL DATABASE OF LOS ALAMOS PUBLICATIONS LAUNCHED
On December 1, The Los Alamos Unclassified Publications Database became available to the Laboratory community. This database is currently an experimental prototype and is being developed under the auspices of the LANL Research Library's Library Without Walls Project.

The Los Alamos Unclassified Publications Database is a multi-disciplinary database containing references to basic and applied scientific and technical literature authored by the staff of Los Alamos National Laboratory, its contractors, and collaborators. It also includes references to other literature about Los Alamos and its history. Citations in this database are to unclassified, publicly releasable literature. Abstracts are included for most references. Coverage begins in 1943 and the database is updated twice monthly. Information in this database is extracted primarily from the U.S. Department of Energy's Energy Science and Technology Database and from records in the LANL Research Library's online catalog. The database includes references to journal articles, conferences, patents, books, monographs, theses, technical reports, engineering materials and software.

A special feature of the database are hyperlinks to electronic versions of documents. The LANL Research Library's Library Without Walls Project is linking PDF versions of new and archival unclassified Los Alamos reports (including theses issued as technical reports) to its online catalog records. Having these links gives users 24-hour electronic access from their desktops to the technical information contained in these publications.

This database has been compiled for use by managers and researchers at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Access is currently restricted to employees of Los Alamos National Laboratory and its contractors and requires a valid @lanl.gov address.

To access the Los Alamos Unclassified Publications Database visit the Research Library's Web page selecting Electronic Databases.

Training will be offered in December. Contact Frances Knudson at 7-5809 or fknudson@lanl.gov to arrange group or individual training sessions.

Since this is an experimental prototype, we are actively soliciting feedback from users. Send comments and questions to lwwp@lanl.gov.

ELECTRONIC LOS ALAMOS SCIENCE
The Library Without Walls project has begun scanning back issues of Los Alamos Science magazine. We have recently mounted Issue Number 15, published in 1987 -- a special issue on the life and science of Stanislaw Ulam, for which the Library's Report Collection frequently receives requests.

This issue of Los Alamos Science contains numerous full color illustrations including some beautifully rendered portraits of Stanislaw Ulam. However, the scanning software currently available to us produces files in black and white. Therefore, we have given this issue some special consideration because so much meaning is included in those color illustrations that can not be conveyed in black and white alone. By creating separate color pdf files using Adobe Acrobat Distiller and inserting them into the document, we have been able to include color photographs. After the pages were assembled, "bookmarks" or hyperlinks were created as navigation aids to the reader. "Thumbnails," postage stamp sized page icons were also inserted as navigation aids.

Over the next year we plan to put all 22 issue of the magazine on-line beginning with the first issue in 1981.

NEW PATENT DATABASE NOW AVAILABLE ON THE WEB
On November 13th, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (PTO) released a free bibliographic database on the PTO Web page which the Research Library has added as a link to its Web page under Subject Resources/Business. The U.S. Patent Bibliographic data file consists of the front pages of U.S. patents (including design patents). The front page of the patent includes all bibliographic data, such as the inventor's name, the patent's title, and the assignee's name, as well as the abstract (a brief description of the patent's contents).

Currently, the database contains all U.S. patents from 1985 through September 1995. By approximately mid-December, PTO is expecting to add all years back to 1976, the first year that patent data was stored electronically. The database will be updated at least once a month. This Web site allows you to search for topics using one or two keywords or, for more precise searching, by complex boolean expressions, field searching and phrase searching. The default in this database is to the current year only but you can choose to select additional years, as you need. The file contains abstracts and bibliographic data for public use. Contact the Research Library at 7-5809 or library@lanl.gov if you need the full text and image of a patent or if international patents are desired.

NEW E-MAIL FUNCTION IN ONLINE CATALOG
Accessing the holdings of the Research Library just got a little easier. The latest enhanced feature of using the online catalog is the ability to e-mail the search results - to your own or a colleague's in-box. Often users creating a bibliography, writing an article, etc. want references in an electronic format that can be easily incorporated into a document or personal file management reprint database. With the new e-mailing capability, you can search for a topic or specific book and e-mail all the references to yourself without wasting paper or the time printing or writing down references.

Here is how it works. First, perform your search. Once you have selected the titles you want, choose the "PRINT/EMAIL #s" option at the bottom of the screen. Enter the entry number(s) of the desired documents (1-4,6,24). You will be prompted for format (summary listing, formal bibliography, complete record), a title of the search results (your name, a subject, etc.) and whether you want it printed or e-mailed. When you choose "Email," you will be prompted for an e-mail address. Enter the e-mail address to which you wish your output delivered and you are done. The results will appear at that e-mail address within moments.
