SHELF INVENTORY ON BOOKS: AN UPDATE
The Research Library's first shelf inventory of its book collection is now 90% completed. From this effort we are determining which books are (1) truly missing; (2) on the shelf but do not have a record in the online catalog; (3) on the shelf but show a status other than "In Library" in the catalog; and (4) out of order. We have corrected these types of problems, which should help customers find desired titles more easily and efficiently through the catalog and on the shelves.

If you have any questions about finding books, please contact the Library Service Desk, library@lanl.gov or 7-4175.

JOURNAL CONSOLIDATION: AN UPDATE
The Research Library is progressing in the consolidation of our Med and Main journal holdings into a single journal collection. As we integrate the two collections, we are changing the locations for the alphabetical sequence. The journal titles beginning with "A" now start near the elevator on the lower level; when the consolidation is completed, all journal titles will follow an unbroken sequence, around through the "Z" titles. We plan to move every journal volume and are planning for five years of future growth. This is a huge project which will decrease the number of shelving locations for customers and result in a more logical arrangement.

Meanwhile, we ask your patience during the inevitable confusion and a bit of chaos. To help during the transition period, we are creating daily map updates to assist customers and staff in locating journal titles on any given day.

If you have any questions about locating a journal title, please contact the Library Service Desk, library@lanl.gov or 7-4175.

LA-UR AND JOURNAL COPYRIGHT: AUTHOR INPUT NEEDED
The Information Architecture Project has published a Request for Help, RFH-6601: Retained Rights and Journal Publications.

We call the attention of all Laboratory staff who author LA- URs to this RFH and ask you to consider providing valuable input. The Information Architecture Project is trying to get a better understanding of the relationship between the government's unrestricted right to publish taxpayer- sponsored research with publishers' copyright ownership of articles that appear in their journals.

Because the LA-UR series is used, among other things, for articles Laboratory authors plan to submit to scientific journals, and because the Laboratory has an interest in Internet publishing and dissemination of its research, the Project is trying to understand what the experiences of various authors have been to date and if there are possible legal conflicts.

Please take a look at the Request for Help and send your comments to ia-area- web@lanl.gov

FREE TRIAL TO TWO ENGINEERING WEB PRODUCTS
The Research Library is pleased to offer to LANL staff a free trial of two products from Engineering Information, Inc. The trial period is limited and ends on July 24.

Compendex*Web is a Web interface to Engineering Index. Engineering Index is the premier index to worldwide literature in all areas of engineering. The product currently covers literature from 1989 to the present but by mid-July will cover references back to 1980.

Engineering Information Village (you must get your password first) is a directory of Web sites of particular interest to engineers as well as to others outside the engineering community. You can find information by area of engineering, by industry type, by company, and by several other routes. Company financial information is available as well as links to several engineering libraries' online catalogs, electronic journals, reference resources, and news services. In addition to providing direct links to remote sites, Engineering Information Village offers evaluations and other helpful information. You can also search for terms through the entire site.

These two products are accessible directly or from the Engineering Resources page off of the Research Library home page Access to these two services is restricted to staff of Los Alamos National Laboratory. A password is necessary and is available upon request from the Research Library either by calling 7-5809 or sending email to library@lanl.gov

WEB PAGE FOR "BRING OUR CHILDREN TO WORK"
An estimated 150 kids plus parents came to the Library during "Bring Our Children To Work Day," June 6, 1996. They had a great time using the special "Kids On The Web" page set up by the Research Library (it's no longer up -- sorry), and we had a wonderful time sharing the day with them. We are looking forward to next year! So, if you did not have your kids try out our special Web page this year, be sure not to miss it next time around.
