The four initiatives within this project are:
1. Making the unclassified formal Los Alamos reports available in full-image format using the library on-line catalog
2. The purchase of the ISI Science Citation Index Databases tapes and, in collaboration with Verity, Inc., the creation of an interface to allow Laboratory staff to easily search for journal articles or cited references and to determine which of these journal articles are available in the Research Library journal collection using SciSearch® at LANL.
3. A project to provide as many electronic versions of journals, as possible, available at the researcher's desktops- involving scientific publishers and resolving technological issues to bring these journals on-line using a web interface
4. To use the web technology as a common interface to provide a suite of scientific citation databases to the Laboratory staff.
These projects were designed with Laboratory staff feedback on access and interface features. Rick Luce is working on providing a unique package of research services to enhance the productivity of Laboratory staff at LANL. This focused effort has provided the kind of products that the Laboratory needs to continue to work productively and effectively during these times of change.
Return to the Table of Contents.
The list resides on the Research Library's web page; click on the link Research Library Journals. This list will be updated weekly.
The list includes titles that make up the Library's journal collection. It does not include all of the Library's serial publications; it does not include any title that resides in our Main or Reference book collection. Examples of titles not included are the SPIE series and the annual review of series.
There are two methods of access. You can do a keyword search or view an alphabetical listing.
For most entries, the following basic information appears - title, holdings, latest issue received and the shelving title.
example:
Foundations of physics Holdings: Latest issue on display v.1- (1970- ) Latest issue received: VOL.26 NO.8 / AUG 1996 (Received 10-15-96) Shelved as: FOUNDATIONS OF PHYSICS.
Also included are earlier and later titles.
example: Physica norvegica Holdings: All issues in stacks v.1-v.8, no.4 (1961- 1976/77) Shelved as: PHYSICA NORVEGICA. Earlier title: Archiv for mathematik og naturvidenskab Later title: Physica scripta
Information is also included where multiple formats are available. For example, Physical Review D now exists in paper and two electronic versions.
Physical review. D, Particles and fields Holdings: Latest issue on display Ser.3, v.1- (Jan. 1, 1970- ) Latest issue received: VOL.54 NO.7 / OCT 01 1996 (Received 10-16-96) Shelved as: PHYSICAL REVIEW. D. PARTICLES AND FIELDS. Additional Holdings: Location: WWW http://www.c3.lanl.gov/prola Notes: Access restricted to LANL staff. Holdings: (1989-1994) Location: WWW http://publish.aps.org/PRDO/ Notes: Access restricted to LANL staff. Holdings: v.54, no.1- (July 1, 1996- ) Earlier title: Physical review
Hyperlinks are embedded when an electronic version exists. If passwords are required, there is a link to our new password file. Links are also present to move to earlier and/or later titles.
This is the first version of this new tool. Please send any comments to library@lanl.gov.

Some examples of journals now available electronically include: Journal of Computational Physics, Genomics, and Journal of Molecular Biology.
Links to these new electronic journals are available on the Research Library's electronic journals page on the web (/infores/etext/etext.htm).
Since these electronic journals are limited to LANL staff, links to the passwords needed for access are also available from the electronic journals web page. Please send any comments or questions about these new e-journals to jrnlinfo@lanl.gov.

In the past, customers were advised to contact the library for this information, which not only took time but did not allow for 24-hour use of these resources by initial users . The new format for the distribution of password data should improve customer access to electronic information by allowing 24-hour access and eliminating the need to call the library to get a password.
The 'usernames' and 'passwords' can be found on a new page on the Web listed in alphabetical order by journal or database title. The page can be accessed through links on the Electronic Journals or Electronic Database pages and will automatically enter the list at the appropriate database or journal title name. Customers should be aware that some of the systems will not only require a 'username' and 'password' but also be limited to LANL computer IP addresses.

Unlike LA-Series reports, the LAURs are not required to go through the central CIC-1 writing and editing process. Hence, there is no Laboratory organization responsible for collecting the appropriate LAUR's and entering them into the Library's collections. It is left up to the author to send us copies. Most do not .
Of course many are published as journal articles and due to copyright restrictions, we cannot publish those on the Web. However, more and more are important papers and conference proceedings that should be made available to our customers.
You can help us if you are an author who is publishing or who has published LAUR reports that are appropriate for the Research Library's collection. We would like to archive those reports for you in both paper and electronic form. If you have the electronic file, we can process it for you to make it available through the Web or we can scan it for you when it is an older report and only available on paper. Contact Allan MacKinnon by phone at 667-8953 or via e-mail at mackinnon_allan_r@lanl.gov. He'll be happy to help you publish those LAUR reports on the Web and to get them on our shelves and entered into the Library's on-line catalog.
