The Library Advisory Board has been collaborating with Library managers since 1986 to enhance the effectiveness of the Library for Laboratory users and to provide advice and recommendations to Library management on policy, planning and resources. Board members represent a diverse cross-section of Library customers.
The Board goals are:
During the past year, the Board has been instrumental in providing feedback to Laboratory leadership in helping to sustain budget and Library services. It has also worked with Library managers to provide feedback on new products, Library services, directions and issues during the year. Board members meet regularly on the first Monday of each month for approximately two hours.
If you are interested in joining the Library Advisory Board, send a brief
statement describing your general research interests and those
library/information issues that interest you to Rick Luce at Mail Stop P362
or by email to rick.luce@lanl.gov.

The Report Collection requires that patrons wishing to consult classified
reports that bear a Sigma number be authorized by their Group Management
(Group Leader or Deputy Group Leader or higher authority) to have access to
information designated with particular Sigma numbers. Group Management must
use the Lab-wide Signature Authority System (SAS) to enter the authorized
Sigmas for individuals in their Groups. Staff of the Report Collection
routinely check the Employee Information System (EIS) to determine a patron's
Sigma permissions prior to allowing access to a report with a Sigma designation.
To avoid delays, it is a good idea to know what your Sigma authorization(s)are
prior to requesting classified reports. Your Group Office should be able to
tell you what authorizations you have. If your Group has questions about
how to use the SAS, contact CIC-13 at 7-9444 (Select Option 2).
If your Group has questions about specific Sigma designations, contact
FSS-15 at 5-1803.
PLEASE NOTE: All Sigmas are cancelled after one year (unless
reinstated by the Group Manager) OR whenever any of the following occurs
Your authorizing manager is notified by e-mail approximately 30-days prior
to the one-year expiration of each of your Sigma authorizations and whenever
any of your authorizations has been canceled.
The above represent Laboratory-wide policies, not rules developed by the Report
Collection. They are the Laboratory's approach to implementing DOE-mandated
"need-to-know" requirements.

However, after a careful evaluation of Web usage versus effort to create the
electronic version from the paper original, the Report Collection has decided
to discontinue this effort. The paper copy of this publication is
still available for consultation in the Report Collection.
We are exploring other mechanisms for announcing additions to the Collection.
We intend to post in a visible location the title pages of reports received in
paper (but not in microfiche). We also plan to create a Web page of newly added
reports as well. But we need input and suggestions from you, our patrons,
on how you would like to be informed of additions to the Report Collection.
Send your comments to library@lanl.gov
or call the Report Collection at 7-4446.

SIGMA AUTHORIZATION FOR CLASSIFIED INFORMATION: SOME REMINDERS
Because there have been instances of confusion on the part of some
users of classified reports held by the Research Library's Report
Collection, here is an overview of some of the key points to remember.
ELECTRONIC "WHAT'S NEW IN UNCLASSIFIED MICROFICHE REPORTS"
For approximately one year, the Research Library's Report Collection experimented
with providing electronic access to a DOE publication, "What's New in Unclassified
Microfiche Reports," from our Web site. This weekly publication announces all
new technical reports received in the Report Collection from DOE in microfiche
format. The electronic version was in PDF format and text-searchable.
USING WORD SEARCHES IN THE LANL RESEARCH LIBRARY ONLINE CATALOG
Having trouble locating specific authors, titles, or subjects in the
LANL
Research Library's Online Catalog? Not sure of the exact author, title, or
subject? Searching by keyword instead of browsing the first words in the
author, title, or subject may help you locate the headings/entries that you
need.
For example, the keyword search, jw=physics, retrieves all of the journal titles that contain the word "physics" somewhere in the title. By comparison, the browse search, j=physics, puts you at the beginning of the list of journal titles that begin with the word "physics", but doesn't actually create a target list of headings that meet your search criteria. If you do a browse search, you'll then have to select specific headings to view.
Browsing by the first words in the author, title, journal title, and subject indexes is a good approach to use when you know the heading that you're looking for and have a good idea of how that heading is handled in the Online Catalog. For example, personal names appear in the form of surname followed by first name(s) or initial(s). The author search, a=david, retrieves all of the authors (both corporate bodies and personal names) that begin with the term "david". Scanning the resulting browse list, there are about three screens that show headings beginning with the term "david". By comparison, the author keyword search, aw=david, retrieves 3541 author headings that contain the term, "david".
The search menu in the LANL Research Library Online Catalog lists keyword searches in the left column and browse searches in the right column. The keyword searches provide a higher level of recall of your search term whereas the browse searches facilitate precision (i.e. narrowing in on exact headings). If a browse search fails to retrieve relevant entries, consider a keyword search to get a better sense of the scope of headings that might be relevant.
For assistance in formulating search queries, contact the Research Library at 7-5809 or via email at library@lanl.gov.
