The Research Library currently provides access to over 200 electronic journals. Direct links to these electronic journals are provided from the new web version of our online catalog, as well as from the Electronic Journals page. New titles are continually being added as they become available. Recent additions include online journals from the American Institute of Physics such as Applied Physics Letters, and many of the IEE Proceedings series. Through a special agreement between Academic Press and members of the New Mexico Library Alliance, we recently received free access to 40 new electronic journals to which New Mexico State University subscribes. These journals are from diverse subject areas such as botany, archeology and economics. Please send your comments and suggestions about electronic journals to ej@mantaray.lanl.gov.

The SEARCH module provides keyword searching. That is, you can look for a word anywhere in a title, author, subject, note, etc., selecting the index you want with the drop-down box. When you get the results, you can refine your search by specifying more keywords, in the same or other keyword indexes. You can also refine by Publication Year.
The BROWSE module provides the ability to browse or scan a list of terms--titles, authors, subjects, etc. Again, select which index you want with the drop-down box. You must know the first word of a title, the last name of a personal author, the name of a corporate author or conference, or a subject heading; Library of Congress Subject Headings are used. You will get a list which can be scanned for related terms. A BROWSE is generally the best choice when you know what you're looking for. For example: You want to know if the library has a book titled "Chaos." A BROWSE for "chaos" has 3 hits and you see the one you want quickly; a SEARCH for "chaos" has 196 hits.
The other important thing about the BROWSE module is that it also offers indexes for technical report numbers, call numbers, CODEN, ISBN and ISSN numbers. These number indexes are currently available only in BROWSE.
In general, SEARCH gives broader recall; BROWSE gives greater precision. One useful technique is to start with a keyword search and move to a BROWSE. For example: You want material on the topic "chaos". You start with a broad search, for Title or All Word "chaos". You scan the results for a few titles that look promising, pull up the Full Record displays and look at the subject headings. You see the subject heading "Chaotic behavior in systems," click on that heading, and the link puts you into a browse list for "Chaotic behavior in systems." This is helpful because it gives you a focused group of material on your subject, as well as showing cross-references to related subject headings. So depending on what information you have and what you seek, SEARCH, BROWSE or a mix of both can be the best means of achieving the goal.

For many years the Report Collection has subscribed to OSTI's full microfiche distribution service, receiving in recent years, approximately 25,000 new technical reports annually from a wide variety of sources. The distribution closely tracks the report literature citations in the _Energy Database_ now available to the LANL community through the Library's Web site.
OSTI plans to replace the discontinued service with an electronic document distribution service. However, at this time, we have been unable to get more specific information on the what, when, and how.
Meanwhile, there will clearly be a significant impact on the Collection and on our ability to provide customers timely access to the reports they want. We are exploring alternative ways ensure the availability and prompt delivery of reports that our Laboratory customers have come to expect.
Our other major supplier of technical reports, NASA (approximately 5,000 reports annually) continues to maintain its microfiche distribution service.
