SCISEARCH® AT LANL TIP OF THE MONTH
A Tip of the Month feature for SciSearch® at LANL
was begun the first of the year. The purpose is to increase search skills
and improve understanding of the search interface.
Here is the April Tip of the Month. The phrase, Title at LANL, frequently appears below the
source on the full citation screen. This means that the
source title has been matched against holdings in the LANL
Research Library. The Research Library may or may not own
the specific volume listed in the citation. By following the
link, the actual library holdings are listed and one can
determine if the needed volume is in the library collection.
In addition, the title for journal shelving purposes is also
listed. A call number is given for those titles shelved
with the book collection. If the library has an electronic
subscription, a link to that location is given. The latest
issue received is noted and is shelved on the main level in
the current journal display area.

NEW JOURNALS SELECTED FOR THE LIBRARY
Five new journals were recently selected for the Research
Library collection based on recommendations and comments from
Laboratory staff. We also ordered new subscriptions to
seven journals which had exceptionally high numbers of
photocopy requests in the past year. Some of the journals
recently selected include: Composites Science and
Technology, Electrophoresis, Journal of Biomolecular NMR,
Aerosol Science and Technology, and Protein Science.
We welcome your comments on the new set of 13 sample
journals now on display in the front of the library.
Selection decisions are based primarily on
customer data, so please let us know if any of the journals
currently under review would be valuable to your research.
Send your comments to library@lanl.gov or call Nancy Sprague at 7-5809 for more information. The following sample
journals are now on display:
- Chemistry & Industry
- Chemistry of heterocyclic compounds
- Composites: Part B--Engineering
- Diversity Factor
- Foundations of Physics Letters
- Geomorphology
- Journal of Employee Communication Management
- Journal of Energetic Materials
- Journal of Neutron Research
- Journal of Thermal Spray Technology
- Neutron News
- Practice Periodical of Hazardous, Toxic, and Radioactive
- Waste Management
- Radiation Protection Management

SEARCH TECHNIQUES: ACCESSING ELECTRONIC DOCUMENTS VIA THE ONLINE CATALOG
The Research Library's Online Catalog
includes references to over 10,000 items in electronic format. Most Los Alamos
technical reports with "LA- "numbers are available, as pdf
files, which give an image of each page with any graphics,
as well the capability of text searching. Also, the online
catalog includes references to several hundred electronic
journals, some CD-ROMs and databases, and a few books in
electronic format (see the article on FOUNDATIONS OF
RADIATION HYDRODYNAMICS in this issue).
These materials can be found through the regular online
catalog indexes. When you get to the record for a
particular title, you will see information
about the electronic form at the end of the display: the
LOCATION column will show WWW, and the COLLECTION/CALL
NUMBER column will provide the electronic file address --
the URL (Uniform Resource Locator). In the WWW
version of the online catalog, the URL is hyperlinked
(indicated by underlining); simply click on the URL link.
In the Telnet version of the online catalog, you must "cut
and paste" the URL into your WWW browser. If the URL ends
in .pdf (as for most technical reports), the electronic
format is a pdf file and the WWW browser will launch Adobe
Acrobat and open the file. If the URL is for a WWW page (as
for most electronic journals), you will go to the new page.
In this way you have access to actual documents at your
desktop.

RESPONDING TO YOUR SHELVING NEEDS!
In response to customer requests that all books be shelved
on the same floor, the Dewey Decimal book collection is
being moved onto the main floor. When this shifting project
is completed, the lower level will hold the back issues of
journals, and the main level will hold the Library of
Congress, Dewey Decimal, and Reference book collections in
addition to the current display journals. New maps will be
strategically placed throughout the library to help you find
the items you are trying to locate. We hope these small
changes address your customer concerns, and make the library
a more efficient place for you to conduct your research.

FOUNDATIONS OF RADIATION HYDRODYNAMICS, NOW ELECTRONIC
Foundations of radiation hydrodynamics, a classic
hydrodynamics textbook, is now available electronically.
The printed version from Oxford University Press (1984) has
been of out-of-print for several years. The copyright has
been returned to the original authors - Dimitri Mihalas and
Barbara Weibel Mihalas. Working with the authors, the
Research Library has digitized this important scientific
monograph. Appropriate letters concerning copyright
issues are contained within the digitized files.
You can access the files by simply searching the WWW Online
Catalog using title or author. There are 12 separate PDF
files. The catalog record indicates what each PDF file
contains. Clicking on the full display, you can view a
detailed table of contents.

WHAT'S NEW ON THE WEB
Every month the Research Library adds valuable information for its users through its Web site. Check out the exciting new links added over the past month by going directly to the
New on Our Page area of our Web site.
A new page has been added to our Website in honor of Bring
Our Children To Work Day, April 24.
The page
includes links to schools, museums, subjects and even fun
and games. It will be central to the Research Library's
activities for Bring Our Children To Work Day as we invite them
and their parents/sponsors to connect to the World Wide Web
at the Research Library.
