ELECTRONIC JOURNAL NEWS
The journals mentioned below are accessible from the Research Library's electronic journal page.

American Chemical Society - We now have access to the following ACS titles: Accounts of chemical research, Analytical chemistry, Chemical reviews, Chemistry of materials, Industrial & engineering chemistry research, Inorganic chemistry, Journal of chemical and engineering data, Journal of chemical information and computer sciences, Journal of physical & chemical reference data, Langmuir, Macromolecules, and Organometallics. Access is free until 1998. Please send your comments regarding continued access to library@lanl.gov.

Electronic access to two biology journals has been acquired: Journal of biological chemistry and Genome research - http://www.genome.org.

The IEEE Computer Society Digital Library: http://computer.org/epub/ - is now available for an initial unrestricted access until 1998. Journals available there include Computer, Transactions on software engineering, Transactions on pattern analysis & machine intelligence, Transactions on knowledge & data engineering, and Transactions on visualization & computer graphics.

The journal, Science, has developed an experimental institutional access plan: http://www.scie ncemag.org/subscriptions/libinfo.shtml. The Research Library can only offer access from terminals within the library building. Desktop access is only available to AAAS members. The Research Library finds this model unacceptable. If you are an AAAS member or even if you are not, please send your comments to the Research Library - library@lanl.gov and to AAAS - membership3@aaas.org.

SCISEARCH® AT LANL V.3 AVAILABLE FOR BETA TESTING
Major enhancements have been made to SciSearch® at LANL as a direct result of suggestions and comments by users. New features include:

  1. a redesigned navigation bar with quick access to general search, cited search, and alerts from anywhere in the system
  2. pull down menus for index and option selections
  3. the ability to limit by document type and to sort the results
  4. improved marking of records
  5. tagged output with filters available for EndNote and ProCite.

Hardware has been upgraded to a Sun 4000 so response time should be signficantly improved. This new version of SciSearch at LANL requires at least Netscape version 3.0. Please test this new version of SciSearch at LANL located at http://scisearch.lanl.gov/lanl/ and send your comments to sci-info@lanl.gov

NEW JOURNALS ADDED AT YOUR REQUEST!

Each quarter we display journals that may be of interest to Laboratory researchers. We ask for your suggestions and comments. We are especially interested in titles that support the work of several groups. If you have titles you would like to suggest for the Research Library please e-mail: donna.berg@lanl.gov.

The following titles are new subscriptions and are available now in the Display Shelving:

FOUNDATIONS OF PHYSICS LETTERS bimonthly, from Plenum Press An international forum for scholars concerned with fundamental issues in the theoretical or mathematical physics or the philosophy of science. This journal publishes in the same areas as the "Foundations of Physics", its companion journal, but employs a rapid-dissemination format and gives priority to brief communications of current interest.

JOURNAL OF THERMAL SPRAY TECHNOLOGY quarterly, from ASM International This journal publishes contributions on all aspects-- fundamental and practical--of thermal spray science. Its mission is to synergize the rapidly advancing thermal spray industry by presenting R&D efforts leading to advancements in implementable engineering applications of the technology.

PRACTICE PERIODICAL OF HAZARDOUS, TOXIC & RADIOACTIVE WASTE MANAGEMENT quarterly, from ASCE Offers articles about practical approaches and solutions to the problems and challenges of those who need to keep abreast of current regulatory, technical, and scientific knowledge applicable to the HTRW field.

CUSTOM PAGES FOR YOUR FAVORITE LIBRARY LINKS
Starting on October 1st we are offering a new service on our web site, called Custom Pages. Custom Pages allows you to consolidate numerous library web pages into one personalized custom web page with links for the resources you use most.

This program will ask for a z-number and send a cookie to the browser that contains only the z-number. The cookie allows the web server to recognize the browser when you return.

To use, on the Research Library page (http://lib-www.lanl.gov) select Custom Pages. Select the Customize option and then choose from Reference Links, Newspapers Links, Subject Links, Electronic Journals Links, and also upload your Bookmarks. The links will appear in the left frame and the display in the main frame. The graphic in the top frame will provide easy access to some of the main library links such as the online catalog, SciSearch, the Library Page, and the Lab Page.

QUICK TIP FOR FINDING COMPETITORS/PARTNERS
One of the best methods to locate possible competitors or partners working in a subject area of interest to you, is to perform a search on IBM's Patent Server: http://www.ibm.com/patents. The site provides searchable access to U.S. patents since January 1971. Searching can be done in several fields: title, inventor, assignee, abstract, claims, patent references, etc. The help information is detailed and useful.

Performing a broad keyword search often yields many patents and you can quickly review the assignee field to see who has been supporting research and funding patents. It is also possible to discern patterns in the research -- note how many patents per year are being granted in the field; is the number dramatically increasing? or did work seem to slow and halt during certain periods. What countries seem to dominate the patent process? Is the research being carried out primarily by academic institutions or private corporations? Reviewing the patent references can also provide you with a wealth of information on the developmental path of the research.

The IBM site is not capable of a thorough patent search as it does not yet index the full text of patents. However, it is a powerful first-level patent search service for the scientist and I encourage you to bookmark this site and include it in your research process.
