Research Library wins Quality New Mexico Award

The Quality New Mexico Awards are annual Awards to recognize New Mexico organizations for performance excellence at three increasingly difficult levels: Commitment, Progress or Excellence. The awards assessment process and criteria are patterned after the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. The New Mexico Quality program was established to promote and develop a statewide focus on quality practices in business, education, government and healthcare.

The Los Alamos National Laboratory Research Library achieved Level 2: the Roadrunner Award in its first application. The Roadrunner Award recognizes organizations for significant progress in building customer-focused processes through their commitment to and implementation of quality principles. These organizations have documented a solid approach to quality management and are on their way toward implementing their plans and procedures.

The Laboratory's Research Library is the first library to be honored with the Quality New Mexico Roadrunner award. It was recognized for providing distinguished service in support of scientific research. The Research Library was cited for integrating a strong customer focus with visionary planning and using a well-defined process, Strategic Business Management, for managing its business.

In addition to recognition by the New Mexico Legislature on February 4, 1998, there will be an Awards Ceremony with Governor Johnson at the 1998 Quality New Mexico Conference in Santa Fe on March 5-6.

New Web pages for Electronic Databases

A new interface for electronic databases debuts--visit the new "home page" for Electronic Databases.

This new web site makes it easier to find databases by:

1) Featuring quick links to the top databases offered by the Research Library
2) Providing three ways of searching for databases -- keyword search, alphabetical listing, and subject categories
3) Providing more descriptive information about databases, to enable informed choices for which database to use
4) Collecting information on all databases available through the Research Library in one area. This interface includes databases available on CD-ROM, via Telnet and on the WWW; databases subscribed to by the Research Library and databases available free on the Web which match LANL research needs. Over 70 databases are currently listed.

Note that databases with a name in the style "XXXX at LANL" are locally designed and maintained by the Research Library and will tell you if the journals, books, reports, etc. they cite are available in the Research Library, and provide links to electronic versions of the material.

You asked for it--articles now linked to citations!

When the Research Library began disseminating databases out to the desktops of Lab researchers from the Library Web site, one of the first requests made by eager patrons was for the actual journal article to be electronically connected to the citation. It was easy to see the time, energy and costs that could be saved by having the full text available instantly at your desktop. At that time there were few journals available electronically. Journal publishers were uncomfortable with providing electronic access to institutions and were not ready to discuss allowing specific access to each article.

Some publishers and society presses are now ready to experiment with this new way of permitting access to their information. The Los Alamos Research Library is one of the first institutions to not only provide desktop access to needed databases, but to now link the journal article to the citation database. The Library's "Library Without Walls " Project has been developing the systems to make this work. Our partners in this effort are Elsevier and Academic Press. We now have over 225,000 articles linked to citations in Biosis® at LANL, the DOE Energy Science and Technology at LANL and SciSearch® at LANL (access on the Electronic Databases page). These articles are available in PDF format to Laboratory employees.

The articles are made available through contractual agreements that expect us to make our best effort to enable access only to Los Alamos staff. We are granted the right to use this material for non-commercial purposes at the Laboratory and we ask for your cooperation in not sending content for use outside Los Alamos. Our contracts specify that users may NOT distribute content to computers and file servers in any other locations outside the Laboratory. Provided that the copyright information attached to each article is retained you may:
-download, save, and print articles for personal use -store articles for use in either paper or electronic form.

Search techniques: Tables of contents in the online catalog

The Research Library Online Catalog includes tables of contents, abstracts and summaries for most books published since 1991. These are a rich source of information about the material within books, especially collections of papers and conference proceedings. The tables of contents will include authors and titles of included papers. To search this data in the online catalog, do a keyword search for Abstracts/Notes, or for All words.

SciSearch® at LANL Tip of the Month: Efficient searching

In SciSearch® at LANL shorter processing time occurs when fewer years are searched and fewer citations are retrieved. While search strategy is being tested, leave the default years at 1996-present and the maximum number of citations to retrieve at 50. Once records are determined to be on target, change the database defaults to what is desired.
