Database Z39.50 gateway version 2.1

 A new version of the Research Library's Z39.50 gateway software has been released.  The gateway is used for Web access to the Online Catalog and to the databases "BIOSIS(R) at LANL" and "DOE Energy Science and Technology at LANL".  In response to customer comments, these changes and enhancements have been made:

- Search terms are now highlighted in the results.  This is particularly helpful for "all word" searches, where a word may be anywhere in the record, even in the middle of a long abstract or table of contents display.
- Header and button graphics have been improved and screen displays are more compact.
- PDF icons for electronic journal articles now appear with the citation.  The holdings area for journals carries information about an entire journal (web site or print library subscription).  This feature is used in the citation databases, BIOSIS and DOE Energy.

To access, go to the Electronic Databases page and click on the WWW link for BIOSIS at LANL, DOE Energy at LANL, or Online Catalog (first column in the Top Five Databases table).

Search techniques: Multi-index searching

Multi-index searching is useful for many research queries, and can be done in the Research Library Online Catalog and other databases made available through the same WWW and telnet interface.  Using word (not browse) searches, you can search in several indexes at once.  In the WWW version, enter multiple search terms by typing words in several "Search for words" boxes, changing the pull-down index as necessary.  Alternatively, you can search for one word, and then use Refine Search to add another word in another index.  In the telnet version, type your search statement using search commands.  Some examples (as they would appear in the telnet version):

To find books or reports by Rose on nuclear energy,
AW=rose and W=Nuclear
To find work on lidar involving Los Alamos National Lab,
w=lidar and aw=alamos

SciSearch® at LANL Tip of the Month: Why Can't I Find a Paper?

The SciSearch® at LANL database covers journal literature only.  If the paper you are wanting is a book chapter, a conference paper (that is not also a journal article), or a technical report, it will not be in SciSearch.  9,400 journal titles have been indexed between 1974 and 1998, including titles which have had name changes, have ceased publication, or are currently published and indexed.  The missing paper might be in a journal not indexed by SciSearch or it might be in a journal that is not indexed cover to cover.
