Technical reports added to the online catalog

Looking for unclassified technical reports? Research Library staff have added over 47,000 technical reports to the Online Catalog since the beginning of the summer. Records added include informal Los Alamos reports (LA-URs, LALPs, LASLs, LA-DCs), Sandia reports (SAND-), Livermore reports (UCID- and UCRL-), and Oak Ridge reports (ORNLs). Although the majority of the reports added are on microfiche, paper and electronic versions of some are also available.

These reports also appear in the DOE Energy at LANL database, which will now indicate that they are available in the Library's Report Collection. Please note that the Library has over 1 million technical reports on microfiche, the majority of which are not yet in the Online Catalog. Most of the technical reports indexed in DOE Energy at LANL are in the collection in paper or microfiche, so if the DOE Energy at LANL database record does not give location and call number information, please contact the Report Collection staff at 7-4446. They can quickly let you know if the report you need is available.

Sample journals need your feedback

The Research Library depends upon your feedback for the selection of new journals. Please stop by and review these titles, or send your remarks to: Donna.Berg@lanl.gov. We need to know if the journal would be valuable for research articles, if it would be a suitable source for publication and if it is frequently cited. We are also interested in why the journal would be valuable to Lab groups, programs, or tactical goals.

Meteoritics & Planetary Science
Emphasizes the smallest bodies of the solar system, published by the Meteoritical Society.
Biochemical Engineering Journal
The journal aims to promote progress in the crucial chemical engineering aspects of the development of biological processes associated with everything from raw materials preparation to product recovery.
Acoustical Physics
English translation of Akusticheskii Zhurnal. This is the only Russian academic journal in the field of acoustics.
Chemical Vapor Deposition
Publishes on all aspects of chemical vapor deposition and related technologies, news, conference information and book reviews.
Combinatorial Chemistry
Original research articles, short papers on technological issues and brief tech notes that deal with all aspects of combinatorial chemistry and associated technologies.
Computational Mechanics
Reports on original research in the areas of computational mechanics which involve and enrich the rational application of mechanics, mathematics, and numerical methods in the practice of modern engineering.
Real Analysis Exchange
Surveys, research articles, inroads and queries concerning this branch of mathematics.

Physical review electronic coverage expanded

The Research Library is pleased to announce expanded e-journal coverage of Physical Review, from 1985 to the present.  Links to Physical Review A, B, C, D, E, and Letters are available from the library's electronic journal page. Articles published from 1985 to 1996 are available through PROLA, the American Physical Society's Physical Review Online Archive. Articles published from 1997 to the present are available through the American Institute of Physics' Online Journal Publishing Service. The majority of the collection consists of scanned images of the printed journals available as either GIF images or as PDF files. Data created from 1996 forward, however, consists of PDF files that are produced directly as part of APS's printing process.

Future plans include adding content to PROLA, eventually back to the first volume of Physical Review published in 1893. This work will be carried out in stages and the next stage will be to go back to 1975. It should be noted that going back to 1985 already covers about one half of all the pages of Physical Review that ever have been published. Going back to 1975 adds about another quarter.

The PROLA server will be undergoing continued improvement during this free beta period, which runs through January 1, 1999. Suggestions and comments are welcome. Since this is a project still in development, suggestions made now have a good chance of being implemented.

Training -- our place or yours

The Research Library offers a variety of training opportunities. A schedule and course descriptions can be found at the library's website, as well as via a link from the Laboratory's training site on the Web. Among the courses offered at the library this month are BIOSIS® and INSPEC® Databases, Grants & Funding, and Finding Addresses & Phone Numbers on the WWW (see below for the complete August listing).

Library staff can tailor course content to your research needs and/or visit your site for group training. And in an effort to match training courses with customer needs, your input is sought. To submit your suggestions, to register for a scheduled course, or to arrange a special training session, please e-mail (library@lanl.gov) or phone (7-5809) the library.

Cool summer book

If you're off on a driving trip this summer you might want to take along a copy of America's Scientific Treasures: a travel companion, by Cohen & Cohen. Published by the American Chemical Society this handy paperback is filled with fascinating science sites. This is not a list of science museums or discovery centers; instead the Cohens have given themselves some guidelines that helped produce a book worth owning.

The Research Library has just added a copy to the Reference collection--you might want to review it: REF Q105.U5 A64 1998

Ginsparg receives award from Special Libraries Association

An awards ceremony was held for Paul Ginsparg of T-8 in the Research Library on July 20. Ginsparg received the Special Libraries Association's Physics Astronomy Math Award for his creation of the Los Alamos National Laboratory electronic preprint server. Officially called the "e-Print Archive", the archive, located at http://xxx.lanl.gov, allows physicists and other researchers to immediately place their articles on the Web for peer review. This model for rapid electronic dissemination of scientific publications has proved revolutionary and is dramatically changing the world of sci/tech publishing.

New staff at the Research Library

Susan Heckethorn has experienced quite a change moving to Los Alamos from New York City. She comes to the Research Library from the Linda Hall Library, the premier independent research library of science, engineering, and technology. Her last 3˝ years were spent managing a branch operation at the United Engineering Center in New York. An active member of the Special Libraries Association, she currently serves as the Secretary of its Engineering Division. Susan received a Master of Library and Information Science from the University of Texas-Austin.

Carol Hoover is a new Technical Information Specialist at the Research Library. She has just moved from Houston, Texas, where she worked at NASA Johnson Space Center Library. At JSC she helped the scientists, engineers, physicians and astronauts with their work in electrical and mechanical engineering, chemistry, materials, medicine, computers and many other areas. Carol looks forward to meeting and working with Lab staff and hopes to see you in the library soon.
