Engineering Index® at LANL available

Engineering Index® at LANL, the world's most comprehensive interdisciplinary engineering database, is now available.  This database makes engineering research information currently available only in print or on CD-ROM in the library available at the desktop. Each year, over 220,000 new abstracts are added from over 2,600 international journals, numerous conference proceedings, technical reports and dissertations.  Engineering Index® corresponds to the print publication by the same name.   Subject coverage spans over 175 disciplines and major specialties within engineering, including:

Engineering Index has over four million records, covering 1969 to the present, updated weekly. Hyperlinks are provided when the journal, conference or report is available full-text on the World Wide Web.  Currently 240 journals in Engineering Index are available electronically.  If the Library has the material in print form, that is indicated.

Engineering Index at LANL is accessible in Web and telnet versions, and is included in the "top databases" box on the Electronic Databases page.   Training sessions will be offered in the Library, or call 7-5809 to arrange for group or individual training.

Research Library agreement with Elsevier

The Library Without Walls was selected by Elsevier Science as its first Advanced Technology Partner distribution site. Elsevier is the world's largest publisher of scientific journals with 1,100 titles, all of which will be accessible by LANL research staff. The value of this agreement represents a $1M savings for the Laboratory.

This agreement will add approximately 685 journal titles to the Research Library's collection. Titles include Journal of supercritical fluids, Computers & electrical engineering, International journal of plasticity, Space technology, and Water policy.

These titles will be available in electronic form only. There will be journal-level links available on the Research Library's electronic journals web page plus article-level links in the Research Library's locally loaded databases - SciSearch® at LANL, INSPEC® at LANL, etc.

The Research Library plans to make these electronic journals available within 3 to 6 months.

Journal display area changes

In preparation for the Library Open House October 16th, the current journal display area on the main floor was reorganized to allow for more aisle space, particularly near the photocopy room. Therefore you may not find your favorite journal in its usual location, but perhaps this will be a chance for serendipity to strike, and for you to discover other intriguing journals. You'll also notice the plethora of blue journal title labels which indicate that those titles are also available electronically from your very own desktop! Stop by and familiarize yourself with the new set-up.

Librarian presents talk on electronic journals

"Integrating Electronic Journals" was the title of a talk by Frances Knudson of the Research Library at Online World Conference and Expo in Washington, DC on October 13th.  Many libraries are beginning to acquire access to electronic journals and need to figure out how to integrate them with the other print or electronic resources they offer.  The Research Library was one of the first to include electronic journals in the online catalog as well as provide a customized web site, and Frances shared experiences and methodologies for treatment of electronic journals.
