Academic Press begins article-by-article publishing

9907ap_logo.gif (364 bytes)Academic Press has enhanced its online scientific journal library by offering researchers accelerated access to key journal articles.

By using an article-by-article publishing process, Academic Press will electronically post individual articles as soon as they become available, even if the print edition of the article's journal is not ready for publication. This article-by-article system is particularly useful when applied to journals with low publication frequencies.

The LANL Research Library subscribes to three of these Academic Press journals, with publication frequencies ranging from quarterly to monthly, which have been selected to launch this initiative. The journals are:

Journal of Algorithms
Journal of Multivariate Analysis
Journal of Number Theory

Electronic article-by-article publishing is the first step toward publishing journal articles independent of volumes, issues, and page numbers. Academic Press plans to adopt the article-by-article system for additional journals in the future.

NIH proposes archive based on Ginsparg Model

Dr. Harold Varmus, National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director, has proposed a centralized web site for biomedical articles based on the highly successful electronic archive developed at Los Alamos by Paul Ginsparg (http://xxx.lanl.gov). Varmus' idea is raising havoc among the medical community, especially medical publishers who see this as a threat to their lucrative industry. Recent articles have appeared in the New York Times, Chronicle of Higher Education, JAMA, etc. Varmus believes it is important to make publicly funded research available as quickly as possible to speed up the R&D process.

Meanwhile, the Stanford Library has partnered with the British Medical Journal to begin a site this fall for archiving un-refereed preprints. This project will probably be realized more quickly than the NIH proposal and will be monitored to see if getting new research into the public domain quickly is as threatening as some members of the medical community imagine.

Knuth's Art of computer programming

The art of computer programming by Donald E. Knuth has gone into its third edition. Volumes 1-2 are now available in the Research Library (the third volume is not in print yet). This work presents a comprehensive overview of a wide variety of algorithms and the analysis of algorithms, organized in: v. 1 Fundamental algorithms, v. 2 Seminumerical algorithms, and v. 3 Sorting and searching.

One of the work's greatest strengths is the collection of problems that accompany each chapter. The author has chosen problems carefully and indexed them according to difficulty. Solving a substantial number of these problems will help you gain a solid understanding of the issues surrounding the given topic. Furthermore, the exercises feature a variety of classic problems.

The art of computer programming is available in the Main book collection, call number QA76.6 .K64.

Shifting update

As of July 1st, all of the Reference books in the Research Library are in their new location within the library to the right and back (SE corner) as you walk in the front door. The aisles are wider, and the stacks are much brighter. We hope you are as pleased as we are with the new arrangement. Stop by and familiarize yourself with the new spots for your favorite reference books!

By July 6th, all of the Dewey books will once again be on the main floor, and in their final location to the far back and far left (NE corner) as you walk into the library. Additionally, the Main books, QH-Z are also in their final location, almost straight back (center) as you enter the library. It is our somewhat optimistic goal to have the rest of the main books (A-QE) moved to their final locations by mid-August.

See before and after maps for an overview of the shifting project. If you have any questions, please contact Lynn or Marie at 667-3063.

Library staff activities

Research Library Group Leader Rick Luce gave the invited keynote talk at the Max Planck Society's Transformation of Science conference in Schloss-Elmau, Germany. The conference brought together leading digital librarians from Europe and the U.S., publishers, authors and Max Planck institute staff to discuss the transformation of scientific communication. Luce's talk on "Communicating Science in the Next Generation: New Implications for the Digital Library" described the Library Without Walls work at Los Alamos, as well as forecasting the next generation of digital library capabilities.

Luce was also selected to give the keynote talk by CERN and the Association of International Librarians and Information Specialists conference on Information Science. The title of Luce's talk was "Integrating the Digital Library Puzzle: the Library Without Walls at Los Alamos", given in April in Geneva, Switzerland.
