Electronic journals in ABI/INFORM database

Eight hundred journals which are available in full text through the ABI/Inform Global database have recently been added to the Research Library's Online Catalog and electronic journal web pages. Now when you check our Online Catalog or e-journal pages for these titles, you will be linked directly to that journal at ABI/Inform. Examples of journals that can be found are Sloan Management Review, Cost Engineering, Human Resource Management Journal, and Personnel Management. ABI/Inform provides in-depth coverage of business conditions, trends, corporate strategies and tactics, management techniques, competitive and product information, and a wide variety of other topics from 1971 to the present.

New virtual science and technology journals

The American Institute of Physics and the American Physical Society have developed an innovative virtual journal product that collects relevant papers from many journals and presents them as a new journal title.  This concept allows sophisticated editors to select articles from a wide range of journals and create a new publication focused on a rapidly developing field.  The first two virtual journals to appear are the Virtual Journal of Biological Physics Research and the Virtual Journal of Nanoscale Science and Technology.  With President Clinton's recent initiative on nanotechnology this journal will provide an easy way to keep abreast of  the latest developments in that field. Content will be pulled from all journals published by AIP and APS, as well as several society presses such as the American Vacuum Society, Optical Society of America, and Society of Rheology.

The journals provide browsable tables of contents, free abstracts, and links to the full-text articles in the source journals.  LANL staff should have access to articles in journals that are subscribed to by the Research Library.  You may purchase articles from other journals via purchase card for immediate online delivery. Access these new journals, just begun January 2000, from the Virtual Journals in Science and Technology website at http://virtualjournals.org/ .

Agricola: National Agricultural Library online

Doing research in water resources, soil science, or other aspects of agriculture?  Try AGRICOLA.

AGRICOLA logoAGRICOLA (AGRICultural OnLine Access), available at http://www.nal.usda.gov/ag98/ag98.html, was created by the National Agricultural Library and its cooperators. Production in electronic form began in 1970, but the database covers materials dating from the 16th century to the present. The records describe publications and resources encompassing all aspects of agriculture and allied disciplines, including plant and animal sciences, forestry, entomology, soil and water resources, agricultural economics, agricultural engineering, agricultural products, alternative farming practices, and food and nutrition. Auxiliary subjects that support NAL's  agricultural trade and marketing, rural information, and animal welfare, are also included.

The AGRICOLA database is organized into two bibliographic data sets, which must be searched separately. One data set is the Online Public Access Catalog, known as "Books, etc.," that contains citations for books, audiovisual materials, serial publications, and other NAL and cooperator holdings.

The other data set is the Journal Article Citation Index, known as "Articles, etc." It includes citations, many with abstracts, for journal articles, book chapters, reports, and reprints, selected primarily from the materials cataloged in Books, etc. Both data sets are updated daily with newly cataloged and indexed materials.

When fully loaded, AGRICOLA will contain more than 3.5 million records. Currently, Books, etc., contains all records produced from 1970 to the present. Articles, etc., contains records produced from 1979 to the present and will eventually comprise about 80% of AGRICOLA.

Journals which Agricola indexes are listed at http://www.nal.usda.gov/indexing/ljiarch.htm .

USGS's most popular maps now available online

Hikers, campers, engineers and other users of U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) geographic data are now only a click away from accessing digital versions of USGS topographic maps on the Microsoft TerraServer at http://www.terraserver.microsoft.com/. USGS Digital Raster Graphics (DRG's) are colored topographic maps that have been scanned into the computer. Like the USGS Digital Orthophoto Quadrangles (DOQ) images, which are already available on TerraServer, DRG's are seamlessly displayed to the user. Topographic maps use contour lines to portray the shape and elevation of the land. They usually show both natural features, including mountains, valleys, plains, lakes, rivers, and vegetation, and constructed features such as road, boundaries, transmission lines and major buildings. The USGS currently has more than 57,000 topographic maps at the most popular scales (1:24,000, 1:100,000 and 1:250,000) that cover the United States. USGS and Microsoft have combined their expertise and resources to provide the general public with online access to aerial and map-like views of the earth. The DRG's provide full coverage of the conterminous United States and Hawaii. TerraServer visitors can download these aerial photos and map images at no charge.

There are four ways to search for map and aerial imagery on TerraServer: searching by specific place name, using TerraServer's "Advanced Find" search feature, using the world coverage map or locating a place of interest by using the list of Famous Places. In addition, TerraServer has several new features for users, including new zoom levels, simpler and faster loading of new data and enhanced information about each image. Users are also able to link place names from the USGS Geographic Names Information System (GNIS): http://mapping.usgs.gov/www/gnis/gnisform.html

Zentralblatt MATH and Jahrbuch Project news

Zentralblatt MATH databaseZentralblatt MATH (or Mathematics Abstracts, from the European Mathematical Society, FIZ Karlsruhe, and Heidelberg Academy of Sciences) has added in 1999 more than 75,000 new items to its database. This is mainly due to the increase in literature but also to the improved coverage of mathematical physics, in particular the mathematical aspects of quantum mechanics, statistical physics and general relativity (Sections 78 to 86 of the Mathematics Subject Classification (MSC)). Links to a large number of electronic full-texts and journals have been included. To access the full-text, one must click on the abstract number from the brief results list. On the full display, one will find a “link to full text” button.

Zentralblatt uses a PDF icon but this displays the database record as a PDF document not the full-text of the article. This is handy in cases where the abstract contains a lot of TeX characters. When displayed in the PDF format, the TeX characters are translated.

New on the Berlin main server of Zentralblatt MATH are links from the bibliographic data of items from Vol. 1 (1931) to Vol. 159 (1969) to the corresponding pages of the print version (scanned images). This provides users with full access to the review texts and reviewers' names of that period and moreover makes it possible to browse in these issues. Further issues from 1969 to 1984 will be covered by early 2000. Subsequently the files will be made available from all international server sites.

Starting with items in the year 2000 the new version of the Mathematics Subject Classification Scheme (MSC 2000) is being used. These classification numbers allow one to tightly focus a search on a specific field of mathematics.

Jahrbuch Project - Electronic Research Archive for Mathematics (1868-1930) The database of the Jahrbuch über die Fortschritte der Mathematik is now offered under the same new release of software as Zentralblatt MATH. So three different user interfaces are available (standard/advanced/free search), display options are dvi, ps, PDF, TEX, and several further improvements have been incorporated. The database currently includes items with review-text for Vols. 1-22 and bibliographic data until 1930.

There are several main goals of the Jahrbuch project. One is to digitize the bibliographic information from 1898-1943. The original data is being enhanced by the voluntary efforts of mathematicians and librarians. MSC classification codes and keywords are being added to the records. The second goal of the project is to create a full-text archive of the most relevant publications from the 1868-1943 time frame.

Both of these databases are available via the Library's Mathematics subject web page.
