JSTOR for journal back isssues now available from the Research Library

The LANL Research Library is now providing access to the JSTOR collection of electronic journals. JSTOR (which stands for Journal Storage) contains the digitized backfile of 124 core scholarly journals, many of which date from the 1800s. This includes such titles as American Mathematical Monthly (1894-1994), Mathematics of Computation (1943-1994), World Politics (1948-1995) and Science (1960-1994) among many others.

JSTOR can be found at http://www.jstor.org/jstor/. You can search the journals by author, title, words in the abstract or full-text and limit your search by date. Links are currently available in MathSciNet and will soon be available through LANL databases such as SciSearch® at LANL, INSPEC® at LANL and others. Links will also be available from the Ejournals web page. Additional years and titles are regularly added to the JSTOR collection.

Check it out. For comments or questions contact Carol Hoover, hoover@lanl.gov.

FlashPoint version 1.2

FlashPoint, the library's multi-database search tool, has been enhanced with these features:

  1. Nuclear Science Abstracts at LANL database is now included. This extends coverage to 1960-1976 for nuclear science literature.
  2. Databases are labeled with beginning and ending dates. If your date range is not included in a database, the message "years not covered" will be displayed on the result screen.
  3. Search tips are included. Any time an author search is performed, a message is displayed with tips on how to noting that the search will be treated as a phrase; one might want to insert boolean operators or use the comma - relevancy operator.

CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics online trial
Do you have a copy of the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics near your desk or in your lab? Maybe your desk copy is a few years old? Would having electronic access to its contents make finding your answer a little easier? The Research Library is sponsoring a trial to the online CRC Handbook, through September 21, at www.hbcpnetbase.com. Send your comments on the usability and functionality of the online Handbook to mharper@lanl.gov.

Chemical & Engineering News Online

Have you been waiting for the electronic version of Chemical & Engineering News? It's here! The LANL Research Library is participating in a special two year program allowing access to Chemical & Engineering News Online for non-American Chemical Society members. The Research Library is one of only two libraries participating in this two year pilot study. The other is the California Digital Library.

To access, first register at http://cen.acs.org/Forms/cen/register.html. Then go to http://pubs.acs.org/cen/index.html to read C&EN. (Note: The registration page may not give a correct acknowledgement of registration, even though the registration is processed. Try logging in with the username and password you have set even if your registration is not acknowledged.)

Chemical & Engineering News, the weekly newsmagazine of the chemical world, keeps readers informed of all the news of the chemical world generally as it interrelates with the world at large, and of policies and ACS activities.

Please send your comments to the Library's electronic journals team.

DoD technical reports citations at your desktop: DROLS

Web-Enabled DROLS (WED) is a modernized version of the Defense RDT&E Online System (DROLS), maintained by DTIC (Defense Technical Information Center). It has officially replaced the Technical Reports and Research Summaries portion of the online unclassified DROLS.

This product provides full access to virtually all unclassified, unlimited (U2) and unclassified, limited distribution (UL) citations to technical reports in DTIC's Technical Reports Collection. It also includes unclassified citations to classified documents in DTIC's Technical Reports Collection. Newly accessioned full-text Technical Reports will be available soon.

The Research Summaries Collection provides work unit level technical and management data to ongoing DoD research and technology. This collection is a database of descriptive summaries of DoD research that provides information to technical content, responsible individuals and organizations, principal investigators and funding sources.

Access is free. Register at http://www.dtic.mil/dtic/web-drols-app.html. For LANL's DTIC user number and other registration information contact Jeane Strub at jstrub@lanl.gov or by phone at 7-5809.

The top ten algorithms of the 20th century

What algorithms would you select for the top ten of the 20th century? Would one of your choices have a LANL connection?

First let’s define algorithm. The word algorithm is actually derived from a man’s name - Al-Khwarizimi - an Arabian mathematician from the ninth century. Al-Khwarizimi stressed the importance of methodical procedures for solving problems. Merriam-Webster’s online definition of algorithm: a procedure for solving a mathematical problem (as of finding the greatest common divisor) in a finite number of steps that frequently involves repetition of an operation; broadly: a step-by-step procedure for solving a problem or accomplishing some end especially by a computer.

Jack Dongarra and Francis Sullivan have assembled the 10 algorithms “with the greatest influence on the development and practice of software and engineering in the 20th century.” This list and articles on each algorithm constitute the Computing in Science & Engineering, Volume: 2, Issue: 1, 2000 http://sciserver.lanl.gov/cgi-bin/sciserv.pl?collection=journals&journal=15219615&issue=v02i0001.

Search engine news: Try subject-specific search engines

Search engines index Web sites based on topic. The good ones, such as Google, employ sophisticated technology to guess at what you meant and what you wanted when you typed into the little box. These general-purpose search engines typically return hundreds or thousands of results, letting you sift through them all by hand.

Some new industry-specific and subject-specific sites can help solve this problem. They are a still maturing segment of the Internet, but some are worth experimenting with now. They restrict their offerings to relevant sites and the result is a much higher percentage of quality hits. Because they are subject-specific the terminology you use will be appropriate. They build a taxonomy that is recognized and use it to construct directories that have meaning for you. Some engines to try: www.ChemIndustry.com, www.Biocrawler.com, www.Biolinks.com, www.iCivilEngineer.com, www.Semiseek.com, www.Sstreams.com (technical computing). These types of specialty search engines can save time and eliminate frustration when you are need a small number of targeted hits.
