Links to your alerts can now be added to MyLibrary. Designate "alerts" as the association for a new folder added to any existing library. The folder will be populated with links for each LANL database for which you have alerts. You will get multiple links per database if you have multiple accounts. There are two, new predefined folders. One contains general reference sources and the other LANL resources. These folders can be added to any library. Finally, a "personal" area of interest has been added. Just designate "personal" when adding a new library. There are no predefined folders, links, or messages from the library associated with this area. Please direct comments regarding MyLibrary to stbrl-mylib@lanl.gov.
The LANL Research Library has entered into a mutually beneficial partnership with the University of New Mexico (UNM) and signed a Joint Use Agreement on Thursday May 10, 2001. The purpose of the JUA is to improve productivity of researchers in both institutions. One area of the agreement focuses on increased access to products/services and involves shared archiving of paper journal titles. For the first archiving project, UNM will house 6 LANL paper journal titles in mathematics which will free up fifty-one shelves in the Research Library. These titles are accessible online through JSTOR. Hard copy will also be available from UNM within 24 hours from the time of notification, in a faxed copy or via overnight delivery at no cost. The agreement also emphasizes shared educational and human resource development opportunities between UNM and the Research Library, especially in the area of leading edge knowledge management and discovery tools. Activities may include regular site visits, personnel exchanges, joint training opportunities, shared computer expertise, and joint recruiting of computer science students through digital library initiatives in Latin America. As we learn from these projects, we anticipate other collaborative projects with UNM.
There is now a BibTeX output format for most of the Research Library databases. The databases that offer BibTeX output include BIOSIS® at LANL, DOE Energy at LANL, Engineering Index® at LANL, INSPEC® at LANL, Nuclear Science Abstracts at LANL, SciSearch® at LANL and Social SciSearch® at LANL. To use the new format: Mark the records you want to download. Then list marks. Select what fields you want downloaded. Brief contains just the citation information (author, title, and journal). Brief with abstracts adds the abstract to the downloaded records. Full format includes institution, keywords and other fields. Then select "Output in Tagged Format." Click on the submit button. You will see two choices. You can select tagged output in BibTeX format or in a format that will load into EndNote or ProCite. The tagged output will be presented.
New to the Lab or know some students who are and who might benefit from an overview of research resources? Come to the LANL Research Library any Wednesday at 1pm this summer for a 30-45 minute tour of the library facility and an introduction to library products and services. Remember you can get a free ride to see us by calling 7-TAXI. No reservations are necessary but we can schedule tours at other times by appointment, just email us at library@lanl.gov or call 7-5809. Not able to make it over? No problem -- take the virtual tour or send it to someone in need. We also happy to arrange tours for large groups of students.
The Research Library has recently completed negotiations that make over 300 additional Kluwer imprint e-journals available in full-text at your desktop. These 300+ titles include journals from Akademia Kiado, Baltzer, Consultants Bureau, ESCOM, Human Sciences Press, Kluwer Law International, Maik Nauka and Plenum Press. Most titles are available from 1997 to the present. LANL staff can now access titles such as Astrophysics, Combustion, Explosion and Shock Waves, Russian Physics Journal, Differential Equations, Doklady Physical Chemistry, Russian Journal of Nondestructive Testing, Biochemical Genetics, Mathematical Geology and many more. All are searchable through FlashPoint
and Science
Server® at LANL and are linked through the LANL Research Library
databases. Send comments to eteam@lanl.gov
As of mid-May the Physical Review Online
Archive, known as PROLA, contains virtually all APS material from
1893 to 1997. This has been a major effort from APS and one that will
be valued by everyone in the field.

The following new electronic journals have been added to the library
collection and are available from your desktop:
Now that Google appears to be the king of the search engines, a young company named iLOR is using Google to power their new site and help them win customers. iLOR, which is short for "Internet lore" is letting Google run the searches for their product and then stepping in to enhance the results. The enhancements occur when you "mouse over" a link. A small box appears on your screen with four options: 1) put in my list, 2) go now-anchor here, 3) open in taskbar 4) open in new window. iLOR believes these options will solve many of the frustrations and tedious navigation problems encountered by the average searcher. "My List" is a choice which opens a small window and stores links for the searcher. The "anchor" also opens a tiny window and allows you to search freely within a Web site and then use the anchor to return to your results page. The last two options include opening a search result in a taskbar or opening it in a separate window. Many of you can already accomplish these tasks using your current browser; but the addition of these features in such a handy format and space will win many less sophisticated searchers. Another attraction is "pages that link to this page"; a very interesting feature if you are doing topical research. Finding pages that link to a useful resource can lead you to other valuable sites. Discovering the links to specific business sites is a good way to find potential customers/partners/competitors. Interestingly, most of these features are part of a new version of Alta
Vista being tested in Europe. By getting the jump on AV in the United
States, iLOR may have positioned itself to grab a major segment of the
search engine market. Try it out and see if iLOR can deliver for you!
