Access
to the LANL Research Library's full text and other links has been added
to PubMed
via the Library's LinkSeeker icon when you use this address, http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?otool=lanlrlib
to connect to PubMed. If you have previously bookmarked PubMed, please
update your bookmark.
The
LinkSeeker button is available via the abstract or citation views. It
is not presented in the summary display. "Click here to read"
is the alt text for the button if the gif is missing. The presentation
of the gif is in the control of PubMed not LANL.
What does this mean for you? Using LinkSeeker in PubMed, you have access
to all of the full-text resources provided by the Research Library. You
can easily see if a PubMed article has been cited in SciSearch at LANL.
If full text is not available, the document request form is populated
for you, leaving just a few fields to fill out.

If you've ever wished you could search only for books, or only for journals,
or only for materials in electronic form, you will like the newest feature
of the Library
Catalog.
Click on the Limit Search button and choose from ten options, which represent
subsets of the complete Library Catalog. Do your search as usual, and
it will be limited to just that subset of the Catalog.

The
Kirk-Othmer
Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology is now available online at your
desktop. Need to know the critical temperature of polyvinylchloride? What
are the latest developments in fuel cell technology? You can find the answers
to these and many more questions here. Kirk-Othmer has been a mainstay for
chemists, biochemists, and engineers at academic, industrial, and government
institutions since publication of the first edition in 1949.
The new electronic format of Kirk-Othmer lets you pinpoint the information
you need quickly and easily by keyword, company, brand and trade names,
CAS registry number and many more access points. You can browse or search
the encyclopedia, download and print tables and sections of articles,
customize preferences for viewing materials and use hyperlinks to jump
to related sections.

In June, 2001, a workshop was held in Moscow as a joint project with Russian
and American specialists on the topic of high-impact terrorism. The papers
have titles straight from a Tom Clancy novel; but these issues are real
and were being presented by experts from the U.S. and Russia. Topics covered
were nuclear, chemical and biological-based terrorism for mass destruction
and terrorism that could provide potential for mass disruption. Chaired
by former Lab Director Sig Hecker, Sig's opening remarks from the meeting
are frightening in their prescience. "High-Impact Terrorism, proceedings
of a Russian-American Workshop" is going to become a important document
of our time.

Beginning August 1 the Research Library will no longer be offering document
delivery services for journal articles NOT in the Library's collection.
The cost in staff and delivery time has made this process no longer a
"service" to staff members. Delivery can be up to 3 times faster
if you order yourself directly from a vendor.
Please watch for further information on the Library's Document
Delivery web page.
Copies of articles in the Library collection will continue to
be provided free of charge.

The ABI/INFORM
database is supported by the Library to provide full-text access to over
a thousand business and industry journals. Covering broad subject areas
such as telecommunications, management, computers, economics, marketing,
safety and security this database contains industry and trade publications
such as Security Management, ENR, American Business Review, Benefits Quarterly,
Euroweek, The Futurist, Chemical Week and Oil & Gas Journal.
Easily found on the Library's Site Map under "Databases/Indexes"
this product using the ProQuest software can quickly produce a set of
articles for you on most business-related topics. The industry viewpoint
can be particularly useful when investigating the introduction of a new
product or process or if you are just looking for information on current
methods. The journals included in this database provide a worldwide view
and include trade and business magazines from Europe and Asia.

On
July 2, 2002 AltaVista unveiled
AltaVista Prisma, a new
service that helps searchers by suggesting search terms. Prisma technology
has been tested under the name "AltaVista Paraphrase". This
is especially helpful for for the many searchers who only enter a term
or two into the search box. The service works with both the primary and
advanced interfaces. The Prisma box is located at the top of a search
results page.
So how does it work? AltaVista Prisma looks at frequently used terms and
concepts from the top 50 results in the search result set and presents
a list of the 12 "most strongly associated terms" from that
search in the Prisma box. Currently these terms are not generated from
the full-text of the page but rather the title, url, and search result
snippet. Future plans include analyzing the full-text of the page. Try
it and see if it helps with perfecting your web searches.
