FlashPoint,
the Research Library's multi-database search tool, has added PubMed
to its eleven other research databases. Search some of all all of
these at the same time and view the results found in each database.
The PubMed search system provides access to the MEDLINE and PREMEDLINE
databases. MEDLINE is the National Library of Medicine's premier
bibliographic database covering medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary
medicine, the health care system, and the preclinical sciences.
It indexes approximately 4000 journals. PREMEDLINE provides basic
citation information before full records are added to MEDLINE. PubMed
also provides links to protein, nucleotide, structure and genome
data. Links
to full text sources are provided when available. Date coverage
begins in 1966.
Searching by Source/journal in PubMed is a bit tricky. You need
to enter the full journal title. For example, New England Journal
of Medicine will return 0 hits. The full title is The New England
Journal of Medicine. This is true in searching PubMed directly.
Please send questions and comments to the FlashPoint
team.

The
Research LIbrary now offers access to the GeoRef
database through Cambridge Scientific Abstracts (CSA). The CSA interface
provides a number of special features, such as a searchable online
Thesaurus, links to web resources related to your searches, and
the ability to set up alerts on saved searches. Clicking on the
LinkSeeker button (red and cream S-shape) which appears in the upper
right corner of record displays will give you access to full-text
of an article, when available to LANL staff, and related information.
The GeoRef database, established by the American Geological Institute
in 1966, provides access to the geoscience literature of the world.
GeoRef is the most comprehensive database in the geosciences, containing
2.3 million references to journal articles, books, maps, conference
papers, reports and theses.
GeoRef database covers the geology of North America from 1785 to
the present and the geology of the rest of the world from 1933 to
the present. The database includes references to all publications
of the U.S. Geological Survey, and Masters' theses and doctoral
dissertations from U.S. and Canadian universities. It corresponds
to the print publication Bibliography and Index of Geology.
To maintain the database, GeoRef editor/indexers regularly scan
more than 3,500 journals in 40 languages as well as new books, maps,
and reports. Records include index terms and GeoRef classifications
which describe broad areas of the field of geology.
Please
send your comments to the Chemistry team.
The
Aerospace
& High Technology Database is available to LANL staff on
the web through the Cambridge Scientific Abstracts (CSA) interface.
The Aerospace database provides bibliographic coverage of basic
and applied research in aeronautics, astronautics, and space sciences.
The database also covers technology development and applications
in complementary and supporting fields such as chemistry, geosciences,
physics, communications, and electronics. It is useful for researching
materials properties in extreme environments. The database covers
journals, NASA reports, AIAA papers, and also reports issued other
U.S. government agencies, international institutions, universities,
and private firms.
The Aerospace database has 2.4 millions records covering 1962-present,
updated monthly. 348 serials are reviewed and indexed. The database
is the equivalent of the printed International Aerospace Abstracts
(IAA) and Scientific and Technical Aerospace Reports (STAR) (1986-1993).
Please

AMS
Books Online - http://www.ams.org/online_bks/onbk_list.html
This is an experimental program providing monographs on the American
Mathematical Society web site from AMS's book publishing program.
It includes classic titles like Dynamical Systems by George
D. Birkhoff published in 1927 and very recent titles like The
Convenient Setting of Global Analysis by Andreas Kriegl and
Peter W. Michor, published in 1997.
Andamooka!
Open Support for Open Content -
http://www.andamooka.org/
This is a collection of support/development communities for Open
Content/GFDL books. Readers can find online, downloadable, and printable
versions of open books along with support materials (such as source
code, images, etc.). Readers can also contribute to the work by
submitting suggestions, comments, criticism, missing parts, etc.
These contributions will become the subject of further commentary
by other web site visitors. All of this material is stored in a
searchable archive. You must register to use the annotating feature.
Current titles cover Linux, KDA, and Python. Also available is
How to Think Like a Computer Scientist (C++ Version) and How to
Think Like a Computer Scientist (Java) by Allen B. Downey.

Nielsen//NetRatings is one of the leading internet audience information
and analysis services. Their most recently reported figures are
for June 2002, for both home and work users. For the United States,
the top engines in terms of audience reach are:
U.S. Web Audience Reach
| MSN |

| Yahoo |
27.7% |
| Google |
26.4% |
| AOL |
18.7% |
| Ask Jeeves |
11.2% |
Another way to look are use and popularity is to count the time
people spent searching, and this gives a very different picture.
Average Minutes Spent Searching per Visitor
| Google |
40.3 |
| Dogpile |
11.6 |
| AOL |
10.3 |
| Yahoo |
9.7 |
