DOE Energy at LANL and Nuclear Science Abstracts at LANL database have been a good resource for finding DOE-funded and other agency reports and energy research. However they have not been updated in some time and are running on an old server which is being retired. In light of this they are no longer included in FlashPoint, and will be retired shortly.

Meanwhile the data has been made available in "Energy Citation Database" in OPPIE, the new Research Library search and discovery tool. In OPPIE new records are added frequently, so the data will stay up-to-date with new energy research.

LANL now has a new institutional process for Review & Approval (R&A) of Scientific and Technical Information (STI) intended for public release. The Research Library is responsible for the public dissemination of formally reviewed LANL STI via the DOE Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI) databases and the Library's online catalog.

So, the next time you are thinking of publishing a paper take a look at the new R&A website for information on how to not only follow the proper process, but ensure that your paper is as widely disseminated as possible.

Once you have submitted your paper for the new R&A process and have received your LA-UR number, then be sure to check out the Research Library's new Los Alamos Authors database. Los Alamos Authors offers an updated interface and new search capabilities for finding unclassified data that previously were stored in the former Classification office (SAFE-1) database. This data was created at the Laboratory and covers any Laboratory publications that were submitted for classification review. The earliest records are from 1943 and the repository includes data for records through this year.

The search tool is housed on the yellow network and is available to Laboratory staff only. Los Alamos Authors data is stored in an open-source, standards-based repository managed by the Research Library.

You can
· find out where Los Alamos authors publish
· search by author, title, group, document number, document type, meeting information, program codes, or across all words in the record.

You can now can search for journal articles and other documents faster and more efficiently with a new search and discovery tool the Research Library has released May 6, 2008.

Called OPPIE, it will replace SearchPlus as the Research Library's primary search tool in the coming months. It is being released as a "perpetual beta," which means additional functionality and new services will be added every two to three months.

The initial functionality includes:

· Basic, fielded, and cited searching
· Full record display
· Facets, which allows you to narrow your search by date, document type, and database
· Times cited counts
· Ability to limit search to LANL authors only
· Record marking across searches
· Permalinks
· LinkSeeker links to full text articles and related information.

Features to be added in the near future include:

· Search history
· User accounts and preferences
· Results sorting
· Alerts
· De-duplication, which eliminates redundancy
· Browse
· Tagging/ social features
· Additional output options.

"I am excited about releasing OPPIE, because it is an implementation of theoretical ideas that have been proposed by leaders in information science," said Research Library Director Miriam Blake. "OPPIE is faster, has a better design, and is less expensive than SearchPlus, so it is a major achievement for the library."

The LANL Research Library has joined several libraries in the US and internationally in expressing support for the Sponsoring Consortium for Open Access Publishing in Particle Physics (SCOAP3). SCOAP3 aims to make articles in selected high energy physics (HEP) journals free to read for everyone. It is a proposed mechanism for a field of science (in this case particle physics) to pay for its own publishing costs, rather than make the readers of its journals pay via subscriptions or authors pay via author fees.

In this model, HEP funding agencies and libraries, which today purchase journal subscriptions to implicitly support the peer-review service, federate to explicitly cover the base costs of publishing and peer-review, and the associated publishers make the electronic versions of their HEP journals free to read widely across the globe.

In the proposed SCOAP3 model, everyone involved in producing the literature of particle physics (universities, labs, and funding agencies) pays into the consortium which then pays publishers and all articles in the field become available via Open Access.

The high energy physics (HEP) community essentially pioneered open access (OA), through repositories such as the xxx.lanl.gov physics archive (which started originally at LANL, and is now the arXiv.org preprint server), the CERN preprint document server, SLAC Spires, etc. It is this same HEP community that is pioneering SCOAP3. The LANL Research Library is supporting SCOAP3 as a member of the HEP community and a proponent of open access principles.

The Open Access (OA) tenets of granting unrestricted access to the results of publicly-funded research are in contrast with current models of scientific publishing, where access is restricted to journal customers. At the same time, subscription costs increase and add considerable strain on libraries, forced to cancel an increasing number of journals subscriptions. This situation is particularly acute in fields like high energy physics (HEP), where pre-prints describing scientific results are timely available online. There is a growing concern within the academy that the future of high-quality journals, and the peer-review system they administer, is at risk. SCOAP3 is developed to address this situation for HEP and, as an experiment, Science at large. SCOAP3 proposes, for the first time, to link quality and price thereby stimulating competition and enabling considerable medium- and long-term savings.

SCOAP3 will initially seek to work with 5 core HEP journals:
Physical Review D (APS)
Physics Letters B (Elsevier)
Nucear Physics B (Elsevier)
Journal of High Energy Physics (SISSA/IOP)
European Physical Joural C (Springer)

For more information please see the Report of the SCOAP3 Working Party or the SCOAP3 FAQ for US Libraries.

Research Library staff have been hard at work on the next-generation SearchPlus search and discovery engine. The new product will replace SearchPlus and will be available very soon. But we need your help with an important part -- the name.

What we are looking for:
We need a name that signifies the scientific focus of the new search and discovery engine and captures the imagination. However, we would like to avoid overuse of the word "science", if at all possible. The name can be a word or multiple words or a pronounceable acronym.

Description:
The new search and discovery engine searches multiple scientific databases with a single search and quickly returns search results in a dual panel format. Brief search records are displayed on one half of the page and the full record can be viewed on the other half of the same page. Fulltext links are available from the brief search results page, as are times cited counts. A visualization of citing papers is also available with links to those papers. Other features will be added after the initial version is rolled out, based on new technologies and user feedback.

What is the prize?
The winner will receive a $50.00 gift card for Lowe's.

When will the winner be announced?
An announcement of the winner and winning name will be made soon after the contest closes and will be posted on the Library's home page and in the NewsBulletin.

Who can enter?
The contest is open to all current LANS employees.

How do I enter?
You can enter the contest simply by submitting one or more name suggestions via the Library's Drupal website. Login using your CryptoCard then simply enter your suggestion in the "Post new comment" box and click "Post comment".

What is the deadline?
The naming contest will run January 8 through 19, 2007.

New interface for finding e-journals allows users to browse by title, subject, ISSN, and vendor

A new interface for finding e-journals on the Research Library website debuted today. This makes it possible to find e-journals in multiple ways and connect to the e-journal websites. The interface utilizes the same system that powers the LinkSeeker buttons in our databases that connect to full-text journal articles.

LANL staff can:

- Use the search box on the Resesarch Library home page or Journals page to search for journal titles.

- Browse for a journal title alphabetically using the A-Z links

- Browse by subject categories. The new interface has the familiar broad categories, but also provides breakdowns by subcategory. For example, Physics journal titles can now be browsed in 11 subcategories, rather than only on one very long list.

- Search by ISSN, browse titles by Vendor/distributor, or do combination searches, on the "Locate" tab.

- Use the "i" information links to view additional information: abbreviated and alternate titles, ISSNs, and a summary of e-journal "holdings" with years of coverage.

- Use a LinkSeeker button to connect to an e-journal or use additional services.

This new interface does not include print journals, which are covered in the Library Catalog. It replaces the former e-journal web pages and will be updated daily.
